Australian Soaps have become something of an institution in the UK. From my generation that can still remember the first ever episode of Home & Away back in the day's when it was on ITV through to the people, myself included, who used to stay up to the early hours of the morning watching Prisoner Cell Block H. Who can forget that famous scene's when Scott & Charlene got married or classic characters such as Mrs Mangle (Neighbours) and The Freak (Cell Block H). These are memories which are childhood and tea times were based around and even now it's the same for the kids growing up with Holly Valance or Delta Goodrem in the pop charts and then rediscovering exactly where Kylie came from.

Of course the great appeal of the Aussie Soaps over the British ones is they never took themselves too seriously. Sure, Summer Bay is a town with more Orphans than the rest of Australia put together but it almost became a joke at how many kids could squeeze into the ever expanding caravan park. In the old days it was Mrs Mangle for us, but now we have Joe Scully from Neighbours or Colleen from Home & Away to make us laugh...and that's not even touching those Aussie-isms of Alf Stewart and Irene.

In the past we've had to rely on the odd pantomime appearance from the cast members (or Home & Away - The Musical which i'm presuming most people have forgotten about), so what could be better then than getting to meet all your Aussie Soap Icons in one place - Oz Soap 2003 in Blackpool on the 1st / 2nd December. The climax on the second day will be the OzSoap Awards 2003 (NB: voting forms on Official Site) hosted by larger than life character Jono Coleman with musical accompaniment by The Robertson Brothers (the guys behind the Home & Away theme tune). Before that though you can get the chance to meet your favourite stars (confirmed list below) and buy signed photos from as well as see favourite clips alongside out-takes and specially record messages from the stars unable to attend.

SO WHICH AUSSIE SOAP STARS CAN I MEET OVER THE WEEKEND? NB: Recent problems have resulted in the original list of names being scrapped and cast members are now being added as and when contracts have been signed. Here is the list at time of going to press, but please check the official site for full updates:

* Jonathon Dutton aka Tad from Neighbours (also recently starred in BBC2's 2 Pints Of Lager....)
* Martin Dingle-Wall aka Flyn from Home & Away
* Brett Hicks Maitland aka Dylan from Home & Away
* Gemma Biship (Neighbours)
* Sue Manger (Casting Director)

WHERE IS THE CONVENTION TAKING PLACE AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The convention is taking place at the Norbreck Castle Hotel in Blackpool on December 1st / 2nd (Monday / Tuesday). Situated overlooking the sea front on the North Shore it's an ideal location and with discount rates of £35 a night Bed & Breakfast rates for Oz Soap visitors you can't complain.

Ticket prices for the event itself are variable dependant on how many days you wish to attend and whether you're attending the Gala Dinner and Awards on the Tuesday. Here's a rough idea (but check the website for full details)

* 2 day pass to OzSoap 2003 1st + 2nd Dec NO award/Dinner  - £47.99
* 2 day pass to OzSoap 2003 & OzSoap Awards + Dinner (Student / OAP / Disabled DISCOUNT ) - £58.50
