MATHEW PETIT
FEATURED ARTIST
Introduce yourself and tell us what you've been up to recently?
I'm Mathew Petit, I guess you could say my work's more of a project than a solo act at the moment.
I've recently found a few band-members to develop the live show, and also working on a new EP,
a few tracks I've written across the last few months!
And how did you start?
I never thought about having a weird and interesting name that no one would understand, nothing really fitted to what I wanted to do as an artist,
I guess I was good at writing and poetry and things like that (or at least believed in it) and started self teaching myself instruments and singing more.
About a year or two ago I stopped doing other things and focused more on just music and wrote more songs than I can actually remember
People around me liked what I wrote and I was encouraged to develop the music that I wrote, I've been completely and utterly petrified at the thought of playing on my own all the time,
but equally as scared of putting a band together as I didn't know whether I'd be able to actually do it,
but at the moment it seems to be working and hopefully sounding better than ever. :)
Who are your biggest influences?
I've been influenced a lot by Feist recently, there's one particular new song that I wrote after listening to a lot of her stuff
I don't think my music sounds like anyone in particular, and I don't think it's very 'indie', as much as I'd probably like it to be
in all honesty I'd just say it's like pop music, probably pop music that's on the less mainstream side, which is mostly a good thing
Here at Designer Magazine we're all about supporting the scene.. which are your fave local bands and why should we check them out?
My friend Kat Mullen who's been playing for designer magazine quite a bit recently is one of the most talented people I've met and am friends with
she's completely individual, and I don't think she sounds like many female solo artists out there at the moment which is great
What's your biggest promo tips you can give to other local bands? How do you push your band forward?
I just think the internet's the best thing for it, people can hear your music from anywhere in the world in a few seconds which is pretty amazing
things like SoundCloud and Youtube have helped me a lot in the past year or so to get people to hear the music
Where do you go for pre gig food and where do you go post gig clubs in Manchester?
erm, there's a chippy down the road to dry bar which I think is that Leo's place which is pretty nice, I'd probably say just go there
What do you like most about Manchester?
I'd either say the music or the football,
over the last year I've seen more of a kind of 'music community' in Manchester and it's great
bands seem to respect each other, and some of the best music in the country's come out of Manchester and I think it'll continue to do so, hopefully
Best gig you've been to of all time (and why?)
The wombats put on a good show, and I've seen them multiple times and ended up somewhere in the middle of the crowd which is always good
Fave movie or TV show of all time?
I sound like a typical teenager saying this but skins is my favourite show of all time at the moment, I just love it too much
Which football team do you support?
I support Manchester City and used to go to loads of matches when I was a bit younger
I still love football and love them now but I'm not as dedicated as I used to be. Ffavourite matches I've been would either be an away match to Blackburn or a Tottenham match when we were right by the away supporters
And finally we're all about the live sweaty gigs - final chance to say why we should check you out live?
Me and my new band are building up the live performance at the moment,
I think this years gonna be better than ever
you can expect a lot of dancing and jumping around, which is what gigs are all about isn't it?
